Early Morning Trip to Urgent Care and Surrounding Cicumstances

I kept coughing through the night and then wheezing. Wheezing is the secret signal to make an appt with the doctor the next day, get my lungs listened to, and start a prednisone dosepak. In this interest, at a bit before 6am, I called Kaiser for an appt today. When she found out I was wheezing, she transferred me to the advice nurse who talked to me, talked to a doctor, talked to me, talked to the doctor, and came back to tell me to get to Kaiser Falls Church right away. I told her it was rush hour and I would get there about 45 minutes before Kaiser Manassas would open, so I might as well just see my doctor today, early, if she wants. No, I have to go into Falls Church. I pulled out of my parking spot at 6:16am.

So as the nurse is taking vital signs, I explained that I knew I didn't need to be there, but there can be legal consequences to not taking advice's directions, so I came. The doctor had me have a nebulizer treatment, gave me the first three prednisone, and ordered a dosepak plus (and I didn't know this existed) Robitussin AC, which is Robitussin with codeine. I waited for and picked up the meds, decided that since I was still up and awake I'd take I-66 further out and have breakfast at Bob Evans (oatmeal, fruit, home fries, orange juice, hot tea -- I ran out of room and didn't finish the home fries) and stop at the library to pick up a book I had on hold.

I pulled into my parking space at 10:16am and come inside to cats who wanted to eat. They don't usually eat this early, and I swap into a nightgown and come out to the living room to nap. About 2:45, my upstairs neighbor Luke knocks and I grab the robe and answer the door with my mailbox key. He asks how I am and I told him about my night and he goes off to get the mail. When he comes back, he tells me he saw his doctor this morning to get the results from a little lump that was removed and he has lymphoma. I suddenly realize that while he cares about my stupid cold, he asked how I was to introduce the subject of his cancer.

He's had kidney cancer and has been fine for 12 years. The lymphoma is not related and is very very slow growing and his doctor told him that probably the surgeon would recommend watching them because he's 85 and he's likely to die of something else before the lymphomas become dangerous. I nodded my head and said that made sense and he shook his and said he didn't like the idea that they wouldn't treat it, even though in his mind he understood it made sense. So we talked a bit more and then he went inside to prepare to see the surgeon this afternoon (hasn't come back yet).

And when I put the meds & visit into my database, I realized that although I thought I'd drop into Medicare Plan D's "doughnut hole" starting September, it's going to be July. I thought I had to come up with an extra $1K this year, and got it by having housecleaning every four weeks instead of two. Now I've got to find another $1400. I've already decided I need to refinance the mortgage to cover the heat pump, and I can cover this amount of money, but I can't refinance every year.
