01:22 pm: Fell in the Shower

I haven't been online for a couple of days and can't sit up for much longer, so this is it for today.

I think I know why I fell on Tuesday,* and I slipped and knocked just about everything down my left side against something. In the beginning, I took a long time to get to the bed, up, and stop breathing like crazy. I have a hematoma on my head and my left hand hurt so much to move that I thought it might be broken. I called EMTs and they were very nice and took me to the ER. My hand was x-rayed (with me gasping) and it's just really sprained (and purple). I asked the ER doc about vasculitis, the stroke I had three years ago, and he didn't know anything about that, just like back then. I had a very nice older man who was a hospital volunteer and helped me all the way out to the cab.

When I got home, I just fell into the recliner and after an hour or so, I started feeling pain along the right edge of my right foot, and, much worse, under my left breast. I searched on the computer and found that if there was bruising, it was probably a broken rib(s), and if it was unbruised, it was probably torn muscles or ligaments. I went into the bathroom to find which, and saw I had giant bruises on my side from my waist to my ankle -- the top one was 2x4" -- and fortunately, no colors under my breast.

At this point, my hand hurts to pick things up, but not much to move and almost every thing else is fine except for the chest wall pain. The online items I read all said I should see a doctor after 2-3 days, and I'm beyond that. I'll have to make an appointment for next week.

I've managed to sleep and sit in the recliner for about four hours at a time without a lot of problems, but the only way I can walk or do other things without hurting is to press my hand under the breast. One of the items said a wide stretching band would help, but I don't have one of those. Mine are all shorter and narrower.

I hope this stops hurting soon!

*My hair is about four inches longer than in this picture and it's hard to wash because it will make cylinders with the outside wet and the inside dry. I have to pull each cylinder apart and stick the hairs into the water a few times. On Tuesday, it took me 15 minutes to wash my hair and I was actually thinking about getting out and resting on the bed and then going back and washing the rest of me. I didn't, and I'm pretty sure that's why I fell -- too much standing with both hands not bracing somewhere. I'd planned to get my hair cut when it got cool enough that I don't have to use clips outside, but I'll have to get it cut sooner.

Ouch! But glad it's not worse, falls have no upper limit to how bad they can be really.

Yeah, I really hadn't thought of that or else I would have gotten out of the shower for a while! Thanks :)

David has been falling a lot recently too. It's not fun.

For you hair, comb the shampoo into dry hair, especially at the back of your neck, then get in the shower.

It should stop the problems.

Whimper. That all sounds horrible. I hope the pain eases between now and when you see the doctor, and that the appointment yields useful information and effective treatment.

Have you called your doctor, nurses line, or equivalent?

Well, I'd remembered that all my specialists moved to a new big building about an hour away, but I'd forgotten all the Urgent Care is there, too. I can't drive that far now, so I'll go back to narcotics round the clock.

Aie! Soren took a fall two weeks ago, and is still recovering from it. I hope you heal cleanly and quickly.

Oh no! Is he still using a crutch? I'm usually okay without appliances.

Thanks!

He always uses his cane, but it's been harder for him to walk. And coughing has been loads of no fun.

Ow ow ow. I bruised a rib a couple of years ago by falling flat on my face on that marble floor in the lobby of the Minicon hotel. Just ow. I actually thought of your recliner and would have gotten one if there had been any place to put it, because I could not sleep lying down. You gave me some good advice then about asking hotels for firmer pillows, but fortunately I haven't had to use it yet.

I hope things heal up soon.

Thanks! I'm just at the point to have only the chest pain done, so I'm going to try to get groceries on Tuesday and see how that goes.

Ouch! (Though I'm glad you didn't break anything. Dad broke his femur from a fall recently.)

I know! All we old folks fall down! And indeed, my HMO has sets of classes for old unstable folks. Unfortunately, they want me to be there at 10am. I hope your Dad does well.

Oh, what an awful fall. I hope it's nothing serious and you can get to a doctor soon.

It's getting better than it was -- just the chest pain now and less of it -- so I probably don't need to see a doctor. I put in an email to my rheumatologist for her to order more of the big meds so I don't run out, and I'll see if she thinks I need to see a doctor (other than her).

Ouch, Marilee, that does not sound good. Do you have one of those little seats in your shower? Don't know if that would help or not, but I remember my father-in-law used one of those.
How about a haircut when you feel better? Shorter hair is always easier to take care of.
Hope the pain will get to a bearable stage soon.
Take good care,
Doris

I have a little seat, but it's not connected to anything. I think I would have been fine if I was getting up from one that was permanent. I had a grab bar and was holding on to the seat, but the seat slipped. It's much better now, I hope there's a lot less pain soon.

This is the hair that came back in after the last stroke, and only the hairs with six inches from the top are even. All the very long rest are uneven. I was thinking I'd wait until it was cool enough to not need to put my hair up to get it cut. Up near the top here, the_changling has a suggestion for a way to way my hair faster and I'm definitely going to try that tomorrow.
