Well, I saw them like this, but didn't mention it in the post! Both protagonists are black. In The Gift of Fire, the protagonist was black and mostly with blacks until he stood on a rock to give a sermon to a large group of people and noticed they weren't all black, they were mixed races. He decided that was okay.
In On The Head of a Pin, the protagonist is the only black person other than some peripheral folks at the beginning and end. One of the people who works with him is racist but takes it out on the protagonist as him not even have a BA.
