This is really the second half of Blackout and isn't much better. It's almost 650 pages long and there's an amazing amount of padding and much of it is maudlin. More of the people in the first book turn up in here and there are some surprises, but the story should have been much much shorter. The old man isn't the kid who likes Polly, so there wasn't a lot to look forward to.
I recently read Willis's Passage which is about Near Death Experiences and the NDEs had much the same feel as her time travel.
