The Wooden Sea by Jonathan Carroll

My first thought was that this was a supernatural mystery, even though it was from Tor, but it was pretty good. Halfway through, it becomes obviously SF.

Police Chief Frannie (Francis) finds an old dog and after it dies in his office, he buries it. Then it turns up alive again. He buries it again, and, well....

A lot of odd things happen to Frannie and the people around him. His life changes and unchanges. He has to find something important but he doesn't know what the something is.

I don't want to give too much away, but I really recommend this book.
