Believing is Seeing by Diana Wynne Jones
This is a collection of seven stories, all with some element of fantasy, but she writes so well that I like them all. There is a short accurate informational introduction and on the title page before each story is a small Escher-style illo. I could tell they connected, but I wondered where the whole picture was. Last night I thought it was probably on the dust jacket, and it was, and in color.
There's a story in first person by a cat, one with Chrestomanci, one with landscape from early Christopher Chant, and among others, a story that is about another author (easily identifiable, and funny).
I really recommend this collection.
