06:42 pm: Animal Hoarder
A local woman has been found to have 20 live cats/dogs/birds/small mammals and 30 dead. The neighbors say there's been a stench for months, but nobody called until earlier this week. She did this about five years ago and promised to never have pets again, so I hope the judge requires random inspections. I'm very fond of cats, but I know how many I can handle.

Spirit and I watched the Kennedy Center Honors last night. I expected I'd like the Brubeck and Springsteen sections, but the Mel Brooks section was small musical bits from his shows and that was good, too.

I took the trash and recycling out today, then took the coins from the full bowl to have the credit union run them through the machine and put them in my account.

I've needed a .pdf reader that's small and free, and I got Sumatra which took 30 minutes to print one page. I deleted that and got Foxit, which is a bit larger (5.1 vs. 1.2) but prints immediately.

The after-5pm forecasts say we'll have 1-3 inches of ice and snow tomorrow, and I didn't get to cancel my rheumatology appointment because they close at 5pm. I can do it online, but I'd like to set up a new one at the same time, and I need the assistant for that.

Stories about animal hoarders always make me so sad. It's pretty obvious that she's not in control. How old is she, and does she have any family or other type of person who could become her guardian?

I forgot the Kennedy Center Honors were last night. Damn.

The news hasn't said anything about her age, but she does have an adult son, who promised to keep her from getting pets last time. There hasn't been any info on why that didn't happen.

Yeah, I'm not that fond of opera and De Niro, but the rest of it was very good. Maybe they'll show it on CBS.com.

Maybe I'll check that. As for the woman's son, he sounds like a complete loss in terms of protecting her from herself. What a pity.

How sad. I'm pretty sure a good proportion of animal hoarding is an uncontrollable compulsion. Random inspections or better yet treatment for the compulsion disorder behind it are definitely needed.

Adobe Reader is free.

Yes, I'm sure it's a psychological problem, which is why there will have to be some help, even if it's just inspections.

Adobe Reader is too big. I'm still on the machine with only 3G. I'm working on getting an OS I like on the little computer that has a lot more room.

There was a case of a woman like that in Petaluma a few years ago. There, the woman rented a house the keep the cats in and drove up from SF regularly to feed them. Didn't work well and it was very much not pretty. Apparently, it's a mental illness of some kind and I think she was required to undergo treatment. I don't remember whether the house had to be torn down or condemned.
More snow, huh? Hope it's not too much of an inconvenience. It's cold here - for CA standards.

And it's mostly women who have it, so there must be some genetic indication.

The ice was not as bad as predicted and has melted now so I'm going to leave in a bit for my appointment. We get rain and snow tomorrow, supposedly, but I'm not planning on going anywhere then!
