06:22 pm: Superstition, Library Closeout, Nursing Home
I was checking out at the grocery today and the clerk said "six sixty-six." The woman behind me gasped and I turned to her and said "Good thing I'm not superstitious, huh?" The clerk laughed, took my money, and gave me my change.

The Fairfax County Library is disposing of a lot of classic books, like To Kill a Mockingbird. They're not getting checked out often enough, so they're making room for the books the public likes.

My brother just called. Dad has become combative and doesn't know who anybody is, so he's in a nursing home. Rick said he was looking into how Dad & Sue could give things away to family so he'd get to Medicaid sooner and I told him that's illegal and when the feds find out, they make you pay that much before Medicaid anyway. He wasn't happy.

I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one in LJ, but I think there are certain things that one can safely give away. I base this on things my husband, who is a lawyer, and does estate planning, has said. But it is far, far better to start giving things away much in advance of medical problems.

Yeah, that's the thing. He's in the nursing home now, so giving stuff away is pretty clearly to get his assets down. I don't actually think they have that many assets, anyway.

My work phone number used to be 212-626-0666, and my internal extension was 666. My boss started to apologize for my having been assigned that number, and I just told her it was good I'd gotten it and not someone superstitious.

When I first transferred at a USA airport, I was stunned to find there was no Gate 13. Especially since it means everyone flying from Gate 14, is flying from Gate 13!

Equally, couldn't beleive my eyes when there was no 13th floor in hotels. It is still the 13th floor, your know, no matter what you label it! In fact, given how we count floors differently....

In the UK this year, we had a spate of induction demands from mothers not wanting their babies born on 6/6/6. Outdone only by the woman who wanted to give birth on that date, and was going to call her boy Damian! (she didn't get it - we don't do on demand inductions in the same way here).

On To Kill A Mockingbird.... strange how they are selling them off, when it was just voted the Book You Had To Read by librarians. You think they'd stick them in the basement... half the books I want, are in the basement. I have to pay 25p to get them out of the cupboard!

Yeah, getting rid of To Kill a Mockingbird so they can stock... what? The DaVinci Code?

And people tell me I should get rid of my own books and trust libraries to have what I want.
