08:24 pm: Beach Companion
This is not the kind of thing I usually do, but I plan to ask it at bookgroup on Saturday and I'd like to hear from you guys, too. Yesterday's WashPost had a special Bookworld section (we don't get them every week anymore) and they had a couple pages where authors said what character they'd like to go to the beach with and why. The only SFF author was Diana Gabaldon and she wanted Stephen Maturin.

I'd like to go with Menolly from Pern because the firelizards could snuggle into the sand when they weren't getting us things, and we could talk about weird genetics. I wanted to be Menolly when I was much younger; these days I admire Cordelia (Vorkosigan), but I think Menolly would be more fun at the beach.

What character would you like to take to the beach with you?

I wrote a story

actually a series of stories in some MZB-edited books, involving what amounts to a house-dragon. Bit bigger than a cat, smart, females can fly and can't make fire, males cannot fly but can make fire.

I'd like to chat with Stephen Maturin, too.

Thanks! Dorothy sold her MZB stories to Fictionwise and I got them there.

Matt Black from Nina Kiriki Hoffman's books. Not only because she's cool, but also because we could talk about the stories and lives of every piece of flotsam washed upon the beach.

I've never read those, although I've heard of them.

I'd hang out with any one of the treecats, or if they weren't available, I'd pick Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan.

Hmmmm; maybe Willie Garvin would be a good choice. So long as nobody came along and tried to kill him or whatever while we were chatting. Or the Motie mediators that came back to the Empire.

What with the golf game in disguise, what do you think would happen if somebody came up and threw sand at you and Willie?

(I think my own choice would be Stephen Collier, just because he'd be so damned entertaining if some crab came along and bit him on the toe.)

I'm sure Willie would avoid serious conflict if reasonably possible -- and quite possibly get even very effectively and quietly.

Steven Collier might be great too. I find his clowning a bit broad, but he does seem to respond to the audience, so in a quiet chat on the beach he might not get into that mode.

The Moties would be surprising everybody!

I don't do beach. The sun and I are mortal enemies. I sit out in direct sun for ten minutes and I look like boiled lobster.

I'll take a literary companion off somewhere to a nice forest walk, if that's okay with everybody. And the companion I'd take is Merlin, the one from the Mary Stewart books. I'm sure we would find a lot to talk about.

The beach would be doable if pick Micromegas and sit in his shade. :)

Of course, a walk in the beech would be OK too, I guess.

Oh, I'm not allowed to have skin in the sun and I can't walk on sand. This is just a hypothetical thing. But Merlin in the forest is nice, too.
