08:01 pm: Candy
I bought too much, but putting two in each bag/basket has diminished it. Only 16 kids so far, six too old.

I went out and bought yarn and buttons for Sarah's sweater today, and then got enough furnace filters for a year. Since they're in the very back of the hardware store, I'd just as soon do that only once a year. Then I stopped next door at Olive Garden and had pumpkin cheesecake and tea while I looked at the new Kaiser Manassas building going up across the street.

The cats are scared by the knocking and strange people at the door, but both have come out now. I expect more knocks and more hiding. Ack. Howie Mandel. I have to do something about the TV.

Over 13 or so -- when they don't dress up and just carry a pillowcase.

I should expand on this. I'd give candy to a 50-year-old in a costume and Halloween mood. It's the dour kids who have gotten too cool to actually dress up and come around just holding their pillowcases out (no "Trick or Treat" or even "hello") that I think of as too old. I usually give them candy anyway, but I think of them as being too old since they're just scamming for candy.

That makes sense. When I was a kid, I remember being told I was "too old" starting when I was around 11 or 12, so I wondered what the current attitude was.
