08:00 pm: Cowboy Bebop
This is an anime series set in the far future mostly in space, occasionally a visit to Earth. The culture is largely Asian. A group of bounty hunters get together and try to catch criminals, but have problems getting them and are always hungry, literally. Their stories, and those of a young girl and dog who join them, are violent but funny, rough but hip. There is an underlying story that follows all the way through -- love and death. The music is fabulous. The series comes to a proper end, which is unusual and very good. I highly recommend this series.

Oh, my god - I am going to get all fangrrly on you, because Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite anime series ever. It's up there with Trigun for me. (I love nearly everything Miyazaki does, but he's not properly anime in my book.) Bebop is incredibly sophisticated, thematically, musically, and artistically, especially considering that it holds up today, some 10 years or so after it came out. In anime terms that's forever. The music is fantastic - Kanno Yoko is a fantastic composer and band leader, and I think some of her live performances of Bebop music can be found on YouTube. Bob and I still talk about the nature of the tragedies within Bebop, and parts of the series still bring me to tears. And I've seen it close to a dozen times now, so that's saying something.

Hmmm. Actually, I've probably been saying too much. Sigh.

That's a much better review than mine! Now people can come and read yours. It really was good, and I was dreaming bits of it while I was going through the series.

We're watching it for the second time now. Actually, we couldn't get one of the discs from Netflix the first time around so we're seeing several episodes for the first time. We just saw "Waltz for Venus."

Yeah, I'd load them up in order and the next time I looked at Netflix, they'd be spread out again. So once I got the first one, I started making sure the next one was always at the top. I don't think I'll put it back at the bottom of the queueue like I do with some (Millennium Actress, for example, which is the next DVD to watch), but I'll probably watch it again.
