09:17 pm: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
There wasn't much plot in this movie and what there was could be seen coming many minutes away. However, the settings and costumes were great, the child actors were attractive, and I loved the art in the opening and closing. The adult actors were fabulous.

Three children have their house burn down and their parents die inside. They're given to an evil man they're not really related to, Count Olaf, whose entire purpose is to kill them in such a way that he can't be blamed, so he can get their fortune. After the children prove that he is unsuitable, the government gives them to other people, also not really related, and Count Olaf comes after the kids and the new guardians. I hope the books have better plot. The visuals and the acting, though, were really excellent.

I read several of the books and I hate to tell you that the movie was actually the combination of several of them. But they are very humorously told so even if the plot is predictable they are still fun.
Did yo know that the tall unusually pale creature was played by Craig Ferguson of Late, Late Night TV fame? If I hadn't watched the DVD extras I'd never have guessed it was him.

I didn't know you had an LJ! Yeah, AJ told me it was several books together. Yes, I recognized all the actors but Jim Carrey at first. He was quite made-up, and his face is so mobile, that I had to look at the Netflix envelope to make sure it was him!

I haven't seen the movie, but I really love the books. The first couple are a bit slight, and start feeling a little formulaic by the fourth one, but then the fifth starts introducing the larger plot arc. The next time you're at the library, pick up the first several (they're short enough you may not need to use a bookmark).

LOL I'll put a request in -- that'll get them to the close library. The movie gives us (rot-13'd) n fcltynff naq rlr clue, which I assume will be picked up in the next one.

We, the even smaller city immediately to our north, and the county around us share the library system. As you might imagine, the county puts in most of the money so primarily affects the budget. They just barely put enough money in this year that we can keep the libraries open on Sundays. We're not getting a lot of books and only real bestsellers are at the three big libraries. People who use the neighborhood libraries have to request most of what they want. Now, the county would have a lot more money if they weren't harassing immigrants.
