Hypocrisy

First, the feds:

1. The Justice Department is charging Charles Taylor's son with torture (the former-Liberian president's son is in Florida jail for illegally trying to get into the US). Now, he's charged with using a hot iron, scalding water, and burning someone and as far as we know (and I really hope), we haven't used those. However, we have, and almost certainly are, using equivalent torture on people we consider "enemy combatants." Justice should clean up our own house first.

2. President Bush appears ready to ignore all the suggestions from the Iraq Study Group and to continue the war, yet he presided over the opening of the Pageant of Peace on the Ellipse last night. Maybe he should have sent Baker & Hamilton.

And local:

Fairfax City, Virginia, wants to move a volunteer day center for the homeless and is considering paying for the new building. Where do they want to move it? Out into the county around the city. Why? Well, sometimes the homeless [gasp] buy alcohol at the 7-11 next door and sometimes they stand in front of stores and businesses. So they want this center to move not only out of the city, but to an industrial area which is hard to get to on public transportation and has no restaurants or retail around it. They like the center so much they'll pay for the new building, but not in their backyard.

The Good Book

A Muslim Representative is being sworn into Congress next year and Dennis Prager, radio host & syndicated columnist, is putting out the word that Keith Ellison will use the Koran as the book to have his hand on while he is sworn in. Prager says the Bible is the book of the country and Ellison should use it. The problem with this is that Ellison hasn't decided yet.

So, okay, I'm an atheist and an SF fan. Let's imagine I'm elected to Congress. What book do I put my hand on?

Wintry Skies

In some ways, I'm glad the neurologist got sick and cancelled my appointment today because it's very very cold and windy outside. I won't see her for another month so I'm seeing the primary next Friday. The appointment clerk offered me Monday through Thursday, but I already have doctors' appointments Monday & Wednesday and I think it's only fair to have a day between them.

A large batch of small dark birds were lined up on the roof ridge across the street when I opened the shades today. They're gone now, but they were definitely heading for warmer climes. We had chickadees at the feeder earlier and now mourning doves. When the doves aren't eating, they're hunkered down against the wind.

I had a very weird dream last night. My father and another man had challenged a traditionally female competition and won. Their family and Dad and my stepmother and I went and shared a house. Sue made a really big deal about what I was wearing, that it wasn't nice enough, but it was nicer than her jeans and t-shirt, and when we got to the dinner, people were dressed like me. There was a gem and jewelry show before the event and I spent so much time there I never got dinner, so I went back to the house and found a computer with some word games on it. But the programmer had used letters instead of tab, enter, space, arrow keys, etc., so sometimes I'd be entering a word and zip zap! I was ejected from the game.
