07:23 pm: Good Choice
I may have looked silly going to get groceries today -- I was layered up under my coat and wore my Elmer Fudd hat with the ear flaps down -- but I was warm. Usually on Mondays, and particularly on Monday holidays, most of the handicapped parking spots in front of the grocery are filled. Today they were empty when I pulled in. Tomorrow we are now going to have snow and freezing rain, so I made a good choice to go out today. I know it's nothing here like you Minnesotans have there, but it's plenty cold for me!

I was just catching up on a favorite list: Funny Requests from Patrons. This is a list on LibraryThing and you can read it even if you can't post. Apparently an awful lot of people want photographs of Jesus and of the actual rails of the Underground Railroad.

I have a friend who is an archivist in Aberdeen. He recently received a letter from a USAn, on a matter unrelated, but mentioned in passing that she was directly descended from Greyfriar's Bobby.

He replied that he was sorry that she was mistaken, but she was not a descendent of Greyfriar's Bobby.

She replied that she ws, and she could prove it, as she'd had her family tree done by a professional, and it clearly stated so.

So he sent a photo of the statue of Greyfriar's Bobby...

... she never replied.

LOL I knew that one! I wonder if the "professional" was trying to give her a message.

Cold isn't *too* bad if you can dress for it, and most people here have suitable clothing for the local temperatures (since they'll kill you somewhat quicker than the ones in DC will if you don't). And there are things like double-door entries to most shops and restaurants (so there aren't horrid cold drafts every time somebody goes in or out) and the habitrail (er, I mean, "skyway") system downtown, and stuff like that; we're reasonably well prepared for our typical weather.

Freezing rain, though, is a truly hideous thing, and it's not really possible to prepare for it (other than having enough food in the house that one doesn't need to leave :-)). It makes walking and driving nearly suicidal. Luckily it's very rare out here (mostly it's too cold for that).

And the snow from last week is now ice, so the freezing rain will make a nice glaze over it!

We had our first hypothermia death in the area last night. I'm always torn between making people go to shelters and letting them live (or die) as they want.
