I have given up and ordered very basic DSL from Verizon. $15 a month for this year and prices will go up after that and they don't say to what. If it goes up too much, I go back to dial-up. What prompted this was that I had Verizon out to swap the line from the additional outlet I had put in for the second line (only line now) for the computer to the many outlets for what had been the voice line (moving the computer to the dining room would have meant slinging the wire over an archway if I didn't change to the other line). She degraded performance in all outlets from 56.6 to 24.0-32.0 and I think they may have done that on purpose -- they don't guarantee data performance on voice lines. Once it becomes a DSL line (with voice), they don't guarantee the top speed, but I'm pretty sure if it's at 24.0kps, I should be able to get out without paying the cancellation fee.
